This message was delivered at Lincoln Christian Life Center, Sunday morning, March 1, 2015. It is filed under “What is church about? Romans 8:6,” using the NASV Bible.

You have potential far greater than you can ever imagine. Just think of the complexity and the brilliance of your own body. Doctors tell us that the human eye has more than 3 million working parts. No wonder the Psalmist said in Psalm 139:14 (NIV), “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Do you know that as the Psalmist, “I know that full well?”

Besides the intricate aspects of your being, you were made by God’s command. He designed you. Before the worlds were formed, He set together a plan with you in mind. I wish you could even get a small glimpse of what God had in mind when He created you.

One of the most basic Biblical truths of scripture interpretation is to go back to the first time a topic is mentioned in the Bible to grasp it’s significance and proper meaning. That is why we are drifting back to the origin of man.

(Genesis 1:26-27)

Notice the immense value God puts upon the creation of man. He said that He made man after the best pattern of design available. He made man after Himself- after His image and after His likeness. The plural is involved- God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit jointly made man after themselves- as the triune components of man shows- the spirit, the soul and the body- yet into one personality. The word “likeness” describes the triune nature of man. Perhaps the design of man explains the nature of God. How can three individuals be one personality? The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are distinct individuals yet they are one personality just like you are three components that make up one person.

The Hebrew term for “image” is something entirely unique. When someone takes a picture of you, you see an image of yourself. It is only an outward representation of you. So, your outward presentation is a representation of God Himself.

So these two aspects of yourself- designed after the master craftsman designing you after Himself is a stroke of divine genius. You are far greater than you imagine yourself to be! There is never nor ever will be any higher possibility. You were made after God!

(Genesis 2:7)

There are variations between versions of the Bible. One version says that, “God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.”

I far rather have it translated “soul” than “living being.” When the Bible says that God “formed” man, the term means to mold something into a desired shape of something. The Hebrew term “yasar” is a technical term for a potter who is shaping and carving and casting. The term particularly expresses God’s planning and preordaining a vessel for a divine purpose. For example, Jeremiah 1:5 says that God formed Jeremiah while he was yet in the womb. The detail of God’s work is mentioned in Zechariah 12:1 where it is said that God “formed” the spirit of man or in Psalm 33:15 where God said to have formed the heart and mind of man.

The image is more concrete when you think of what God created man with. It says He created man out of the dust of the earth. According to Genesis 2:16, “a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.” So, this is not dry dirt, but damp dust- like forming of clay.

The next aspect of the creation of man was that God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.” A couple of truths emerge from the word “breathe.” The Hebrew term is napach. According to Derek Prince, the “P” phonetically has an explosive sound while the “ch” is a drawn out sound that is breathed-out with dynamic energy.

God took the lowest substance “dust” and infused it with His own self. That means that God can always take our lowest levels of weakness and failure and make something gloriously divine.

* 2 Corinthians 4:7 (KJV) says, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

* 2 Timothy 2:21 (KJV) says, ” If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.”

* 2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV) says, “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

No wonder the Pentecostal experience is so relevant being filled with all of the potential of God. John 20:22 (KJV) says, “And when He had said this, He breathed on them, And saith unto them, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:4 says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Imagine what it means to regain what Adam and Eve lost through sin and be rifilled with all the fullness of God! Ephesians 3:19.

(Genesis 3:8)

Let us consider one another aspect-

Let us consider one other aspect- that of finding your purpose and meaning in life- for which you were created. Every evening, Adam and Eve enjoyed the presence of God- in the cool of the day. It was the regathering and refocusing in their lives which gave them clarity and direction. But through sin, they lost the precious connection and relationship. They were then on their own- in confusion and desperation. Life had fallen apart.

That is a reminder of Augustine’s observation. He lived 30 years of a dead-end life. Then came the supreme moment of surrender. “Our heart’s were for You, O God, and they shall not rest until they rest in You.” He went on to say, “All human longing is really longing for God.”

It is out of fellowship with God that you win insights and direction so you find the fulfillment you were designed to experience. John Powell explains, “Open all the doors and windows of your soul to the Lord. Don’t keep any rooms closed or locked off to Him. Let Jesus take over. The depth of the faith that releases the power of God is measured by your willingness to let God direct your life.”

The highest moments for God now are the moments He wants to be intimately close.

I know and you must realize that there are enormous hindrances that prevent you from finding and fulfilling your potential- to know how to listen and get closely connected to God.

After the creation of man, Satan attempted to undermine God’s plan being filled with malicious hatred. This is an issue that needs to be addressed so you can deal with it and go on to finding meaning and purpose in your life. However, before launching into that vast area let the truth settle deeply in your heart- that you were designed by none other than God Himself- to fulfill the most glorious future. Just getting a vision of that is empowering.

Note from Carrie LeBlanc: I have learned that God has given all of us potential to do amazing things. We all have the power through God to make and change this world into a better place.
