I’m not going to talk about style or quality. I’m just going to teach you how to buy an engagement ring. This will probably be the most expensive thing you’ll buy besides a car or a house.

IT WILL TAKE 2 OR 3 MONTHS OF YOUR INCOME

It is known that an engagement ring should cost between 2 or 3 months of your income. This can suck, but this should be a once in a lifetime purchase. If you have just started working the payments would cost about $3500 a month.

WHY BE CONVENTIONAL

While you will want her to feel special and let her know you love her, you might want to figure out if you can handle that kind of a payment.

DEFINITELY DON’T BORROW FOR IT

If she really loves you she will feel horrible if she found out you borrowed the money.

CHECK OUT DIFFERENT PLACES

Whatever you do, don’t buy it at the first store you go into. Do some research. You may talk about different types of rings in front of your fiancé, but never, ever negotiate for her ring in front of her. It will make her feel like you don’t love her if the negotiation goes bad and you end up walking out.

A lot of jeweler’s are pretty flexible, but whatever you do, “Leave her at home!” That way if you don’t find what you want, or it’s not at the price you’re looking for, you will not feel obligated to buy it and will be able to leave. If you decide later on that you did like something, you could always go back and try to negotiate with the jeweler again.

YOU CAN ALSO BUY THE DIAMOND AND RING SEPARATELY

Let’s say your fiancé has an idea of the ring she wants, you might end up having to buy the ring from that store. If it has a large diamond in the center, then you can always go elsewhere to buy it. The jeweler will try to talk you out of it, of course, as it is their job to make the sale, but you will probably save money if you don’t listen to him and look around more.

We will be talking about the rings for men in the next article.
